Hatteras Hammocks began in 1971 along the Carolina coast, when a tobacco buyer, Walter Perkins, bought his mother a rope hammock for a gift. He also bought one for himself so he could take it apart to figure out how it was made. Then he began selling an improved hammock from his trunk on business trips.
By the mid 1980’s, Hatteras Hammocks had blossomed into one of the world’s top hammock producers. They also expanded their line to inculde hammock chairs, hammock stands, and hammock accessories. Today, the company is still known for its state of the art manufacturing and tradition of innovation. Perhaps the biggest reason may be that they are still asking the same question Perkins did: How we can make it better still?
