I know that everyone is talking about watching streaming movies nowadays and I do have Netflix. But I still have a passion for DVDs and I have a large collection of movies that I watch over and over. Also streaming has made it so that DVDs are so reasonable to purchase today.
My favorite place to watch DVDs is from my portable hammock. This is also number four of what I like to do in my hammock. I use my portable hammock because I can use it on rainy days and in the cold winter months. I keep a hammock stand in the garage and I can move it around depending on where I feel like hanging out. So with a portable DVD player, a portable hammock, and a hammock stand I can enjoy watching movies all year around in total comfort.
I live about 3 hours from the ocean and therefore do not get to lay in the sand and catch a tan. I have always wanted to be able to go to the beach to catch some rays but job and family has made that impossible. I am careful with my tanning to make sure that I do not abuse my skin to the point where I could get skin cancer and I also have yearly checks with the doctor.
So, the next best thing I have found, because I cannot tan at the beach, is to catch some sun in my hammock. Because I am using a hammock stand I can move it from sun to shade as much as I want. I purchased a nylon hammock just for this purpose. The nylon hammock is mildew resistant and quick-dry so that makes it good for sun bathing. Sometimes, when I am laying in my hammock, I pretend that I am at the beach. I should check for wave sounds that I can play on my phone while sunning!
Do you like to lie outside in the yard and look up at the stars? My son and I like to imagine what shapes the stars look like. But I don’t like bugs so I pull out the quilted hammock and gaze at the stars from there. It is so peaceful and a really fun family activity. The kids may not remember the expensive gift you gave them for Christmas but they will always remember the time you spent with them.
Lately we also started keeping notes, while we are are lying in the quilted hammock, about what we found. I date the notes so that we can see if we found certain shapes again. My best one is the lion face shape. It does take a lot of imagination but it sure is fun.
I have been in the house for my fourth day today, due to the winter weather for the last three days. I count my blessings and am so thankful for many things: the power is on, my house is warm, I have plenty to eat and plenty to do, and I have a Byer of Maine Brazilian hammock in my house! Life is good!
But I am beginning to feel like a big fat bear in hibernation! I will be ready for a bit of sunshine to melt this snow and a bit of outdoor exercise when I don’t have to worry about about breaking a bone!
I am going to have a productive day getting my tax papers together. I am drinking my coffee, then digging in to that project to get it done. Then I will reward myself with a little nap in my indoor Brazilian hammock! This is what I call embracing winter to the best of my ability!
But, I just look out at my hammock tree and it is hard to believe that in a couple months I will be hanging from that tree, in my OBX Hammocks rope hammock. I will be reading a book and listening to the birds chirping around me. That daydream brightens up a cold, winter day.
This is my third favorite thing to do in my hammock. For some of my friends this is number one, but for me, it is number three. As you probably guessed by the title it is taking a nap. I have not slept all night in my hammock yet, but I would like to try it sometime.
If you like to rock yourself to sleep, you can tie a rope to the side of the hammock (near your hand) and then tie the other end of the rope to a tree branch (if you have one available). If you don’t have a tree in that area then you can use a garden stake. Then you can gently rock yourself to sleep! My hammock is light enough to be a folding hammock and I have taken it on vacation. These are the best naps ever! Period.
